Update on Developer Access and Platform Security

As communicated in February 2025, Spotify will end support for the implicit grant flow, HTTP redirect URIs, and localhost aliases in their OAuth system. Existing apps must migrate to secure alternatives like Authorization Code Flow with PKCE and HTTPS redirect URIs to avoid service disruption.

Updating the Criteria for Web API Extended Access

To improve security for our users, Spotify is planning to remove support for two ways of integrating with Spotify that have been replaced with more secure alternatives. This includes deprecating use of the implicit grant as well as removing support for unencrypted HTTP redirect URIs for your client.

Third-party apps are an essential part of the Spotify experience. From playlist management software to social listening experiences, thousands of important apps connect to the Web API every day. Since we launched the Spotify Developer Platform, we have seen developers worldwide use our APIs to create apps, integrations or use it as a learning platform to learn new skills. We love seeing all the different apps, projects and integrations, and we want to continue supporting and encouraging this. At Spotify, we continue to focus on improving the user experience, quality, and safety of the third-party apps that our users install. To support these efforts, we are launching three changes to our platform to help developers build better apps for the Spotify community.

Spotify’s Web API engineers do their best to keep the Web API online. Occasionally though, the API does experience downtime and degraded service. We know that outages have an impact on apps that rely on the Web API, and so today, we are launching the [Web API status page](https://status.spotify.dev/): a new website with up-to-date information about ongoing API incidents.

Apps that make requests to the [Spotify Web API](/documentation/web-api/) rely on OAuth 2.0: a system that helps users authorize third-apps to access Spotify data. Since 2014, Spotify has supported three OAuth flows: the implicit grant flow, the authorization code flow, and the client credentials flow. Today, we are excited to announce that Spotify is offering support for the Proof Key for Code Exchange (PKCE) extension to the OAuth 2.0 authorization code flow. PKCE makes it easier for developers to build mobile and desktop apps that require permission from Spotify users.

Getting help with building Spotify apps just got easier. Today, we're introducing the [Spotify for Developers community forum](https://community.spotify.com/t5/Spotify-for-Developers/bd-p/Spotify_Developer), a new home for conversations about developing software on the Spotify platform. This forum is the place to ask questions about Spotify developer tools, share feedback on the platform, and connect with other developers who are building on the Spotify API.

Today we are excited to announce the launch of our new Podcast APIs, a set of API features that allow developers to build podcast experiences for Spotify users. You can use the Podcast APIs to search Spotify’s podcast catalog, programmatically follow or unfollow podcasts, and fetch information about episodes and podcast shows. The Spotify mobile SDKs allow developers to create iOS and Android apps that interact with Spotify. We’re excited to announce that apps using our mobile SDKs can now connect to Spotify while a device is offline. This feature makes it possible for mobile apps to control playback and authenticate a Spotify user when they are without a network connection. Read on to learn more about how to implement offline authentication for your platform.


New: Build offline Spotify experiences using our iOS and Android SDKs

Last year, we announced that Spotify will move away from supporting our old streaming SDK in favor of a solution that enables both Spotify Free and Premium users to utilize playback controls in a third party context. We launched our new mobile SDKs in September 2018, and also took our iOS SDK out of beta.
